Fixing stuff around yourself

A clean and healthy environment makes us feel better, it gives us a gut feeling that most of the things are perfectly aligned. It basically uplifts our mood which is good for our mental health and the way it increases our productivity is beyond our imagination.
Keeping ourselves organized is difficult but the satisfaction achieved by doing this cannot be explained. As it is said that

For every minute spent organizing an hour is earned”.

Consider you have just woken up and your bed is in the state of complete mess, you can just make it in 5 minutes and then you will watch It whole day and praise yourself which will give you a sense of accomplishment.

The figure below clearly illustrates the difference between organized and disorganized surroundings. The person at the right is feeling contented and is working without any distractions from the surroundings.

As I was completing my online course on leadership, a task came in which I had to identify a thing which is messed up and needs to be organized. I was in my grandfather’s room, I looked around and realized that the book shelf is cluttered to a great extent, so I decided to fix it.

As you can see in the picture above that the book shelf consisted of so many things which should not be there ideally. It had hangers, blocks, so many extra boxes and some useless stuff which was giving an unpleasant sight. Basically it is our common room, whenever any of our relatives come they prefer to sit in this room so this shelf needs to be organized in order to avoid the bad impression that we don’t really take care of our surroundings. It could be fixed simply by the Japanese concept of 5S which is Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize and sustain. 5s is explained as follows:

Following the principles of sort and set in order, I put away the things which were not required and then adjusted the remaining things according to their positions. Furthermore I applied the concept of shine as well as I cleaned the whole shelf.

Since I performed this activity at night so after completing it I slept with sense of accomplishment like I have really done something significant. Furthermore my family members were literally surprised because I normally don’t do these sort of activities.
Honestly I would not have done this task unless asked to do so. I used to do these sort of activities during the hostel life but not when at home. Being busy in my daily routine activities I normally don’t bother to do acts like this but the impact it had upon me is everlasting and now I would look for other messy things in my house so that I can amend them and uplift my mood.
It is definitely linked to everyday leadership and for these sort of activities authority is not really required. I think the word responsibility fits here perfectly if I had done the task by myself without being assigned.

We should be more aware of our surroundings and try to rectify most of the things at priority since this is the ultimate reason behind high efficiency and productivity.
